When people first decide to move to Costa Rica, they often search for "the best place to live."
The truth?
There isn't one.
Costa Rica may be a relatively small country, but living in Guanacaste feels completely different from living in the southern Pacific.
Both regions have incredible beaches, warm weather, friendly people, and amazing wildlife.
But the day-to-day lifestyle couldn't be more different.
After spending years living in Guanacaste and traveling throughout the country, I've realized that most people aren't choosing between two beaches.
They're choosing between two completely different lifestyles.
Let's look at the biggest differences.
Climate
This is usually the first thing people notice.
Guanacaste
Guanacaste is Costa Rica's sunniest region.
The dry season runs roughly from December through April, and even during the rainy season you'll often wake up to sunshine before afternoon showers arrive.
Everything feels brighter.
More blue skies.
More beach days.
Less humidity.
If you're moving from Canada because you've had enough of grey winters, Guanacaste delivers exactly what most people picture when they imagine tropical living.
Southern Costa Rica
The south is dramatically greener.
It's rainforest.
Mountains disappear into clouds.
Waterfalls seem to appear around every corner.
The tradeoff?
Much more rain.
Higher humidity.
More overcast days.
Many people absolutely love that jungle environment.
Others discover after a few months that they miss seeing the sun.
Beaches
Both regions have spectacular beaches.
They're just different.
Guanacaste
Think wide sandy beaches.
Calm swimming.
Beautiful sunsets almost every evening.
Marinas.
Beach clubs.
Restaurants directly on the sand.
Places like Playa Flamingo, Potrero, Playa Grande, Tamarindo, Playa Conchal and Las Catalinas each have their own personality while being only minutes apart.
If you enjoy spending time in the water with family, Guanacaste offers some of the country's best swimming beaches.
Southern Costa Rica
Southern beaches often feel wild.
Huge waves.
Dense jungle reaching right to the shoreline.
Very little development.
They're stunning, especially for people looking for nature rather than resort-style amenities.
Many beaches feel like you've discovered them yourself.
Lifestyle
This is where the biggest difference appears.
Guanacaste
Life is easy.
Modern grocery stores.
International schools.
Large gyms.
Private healthcare.
Good restaurants.
Marinas.
Golf courses.
Reliable internet.
Large expat communities.
You can still enjoy authentic Costa Rica while having many of the conveniences people are used to.
For many families, retirees and remote workers, that's a huge advantage.
Southern Costa Rica
Life slows down.
A lot.
Towns are generally smaller.
There are fewer services.
Less shopping.
Less nightlife.
Less traffic.
People who choose the south usually aren't looking for convenience.
They're intentionally choosing simplicity.
Accessibility
This often surprises buyers.
Guanacaste
The Liberia International Airport is one of Guanacaste's biggest advantages.
Many direct flights arrive from Canada and the United States, meaning family and friends can often visit without connecting through San José.
Roads throughout much of the region are also very good.
It's easy to explore multiple beach towns in a single afternoon.
Southern Costa Rica
Most destinations require considerably more driving from San José.
Some areas involve mountain roads and longer travel times.
That isolation is actually one of the reasons many residents love living there.
Real Estate
Neither region is inexpensive anymore.
But they attract different buyers.
Guanacaste
You'll find everything from beachfront condos to luxury gated communities, golf properties, marina homes, family neighborhoods and investment properties.
The rental market is also strong in many coastal communities because of year-round tourism.
If you're hoping to combine lifestyle with investment potential, Guanacaste offers many opportunities.
Southern Costa Rica
The south attracts buyers looking for acreage, jungle homes, eco-retreats and private estates surrounded by nature.
If your dream is waking up to monkeys, toucans and waterfalls every morning, the south offers that in abundance.
Community
One of the things many new residents appreciate about Guanacaste is how connected the international community is.
It's easy to meet people.
There are sports leagues, fitness groups, charity events, beach cleanups, live music, business networking and social clubs happening year-round.
The southern zone certainly has expat communities as well, but they're generally smaller and spread farther apart.
For some people, that's perfect.
Others prefer having more opportunities to build friendships quickly.
Which Region Fits You?
Choose Guanacaste if you want:
- More sunshine
- Easier travel
- International airport access
- Strong infrastructure
- Excellent restaurants
- Great beaches for swimming
- Active expat communities
- Strong investment potential
- Modern conveniences without giving up the Costa Rica lifestyle
Choose Southern Costa Rica if you want:
- Dense rainforest
- Maximum privacy
- Eco-living
- Cooler jungle mornings
- Waterfalls
- Wildlife everywhere
- Smaller communities
- A slower pace of life
Neither choice is wrong.
They're simply different.
My Take
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that all of Costa Rica feels the same.
It doesn't.
The first time I visited the southern Pacific, I loved it.
It's incredibly beautiful.
But I also realized it wasn't where I wanted to build my life.
For me, Guanacaste offers the best balance.
I can spend the morning at the beach, work in the afternoon, go to the gym, enjoy great restaurants, catch a direct flight back to Canada when needed, and still enjoy everything that makes Costa Rica special.
That's why we've chosen to call Guanacaste home.
And for many Canadians and Americans considering the move, I think it strikes the perfect balance between paradise and practicality.
If you're still trying to decide where to live, don't choose based on photos alone.
Come spend time in each region.
You'll quickly discover that while both are beautiful, one will probably feel like home.
