Read ArticleThe real family test is ordinary life
A family can love Costa Rica for a week and still struggle to live here. The better test is quieter: school drop-offs, groceries, work calls, doctor visits, gym time, dinner, rainy-season roads, and whether everyone has enough independence without feeling isolated.
Town choice changes the childhood
Tamarindo offers activity, services, schools nearby, and an easier social landing. Potrero and Surfside feel more residential and slower. Flamingo is polished and scenic. Grande and Langosta offer quieter pockets near Tamarindo. Coco is practical and service-rich. The right choice depends on the rhythm your family needs, not the prettiest photo.
Community is built through repetition
Families tend to settle when they create repeatable anchors: the same beach walk, coffee stop, sport, school routine, restaurant, gym, or weekend activity. Guanacaste can feel wonderfully open, but belonging still comes from showing up consistently.
